Galt Mine Park

Exciting changes are coming to north Lethbridge! The Galt No. 6 Mine site—an iconic piece of Western Canadian history—has officially been designated a Municipal Historic Resource by Lethbridge City Council. Nestled within the vibrant community of Legacy Ridge, this 26-hectare cultural landscape is being transformed into a dynamic interpretive park (on 3 acres) that will celebrate the legacy of coal mining and its foundational role in shaping Lethbridge.

Honouring the Legacy of the Galt No. 6 Mine

Originally opened in 1909, just after the completion of the High Level Bridge, the Galt No. 6 Mine was a powerhouse of industry. Its rich, high quality coal seams fueled a booming economy and helped drive the natural resource surge in the region. At its peak in 1919, the mine contributed to a staggering one million tonnes of coal production and supported 20,000 workers across 10 mines. Though operations slowed by 1926 and ceased in 1935, the site still holds remnants of its industrious past—including the drift tunnel, fan house foundations, engine house, tipple, power house, and boiler hoist—offering a rare glimpse into the coal mining era.

Now, with the collaboration of Melcor Developments, the Lethbridge Historical Society, and the City of Lethbridge, this historic site is being thoughtfully reimagined. The vision? A beautiful, sustainable park that not only preserves the physical remnants of the mine but also brings its story to life for future generations. As Legacy Ridge continues to grow, the park will become a central destination—an immersive experience that connects residents and visitors alike to the roots of Lethbridge’s development.

Legacy Ridge itself is a community like no other. It’s the only neighborhood on the north side with deep historical significance, breathtaking coulee views, expansive green spaces, and an elementary school. Here, you’ll find a lifestyle that blends nature, history, and family—where every walk through the park is a step back in time and a celebration of progress.
